Can You Get Wealthy Buying And Selling Small Cap Stocks?

Although penny stocks usually are very risky, they appeal to traders as a result of potential payoff. The little capitalization usually means that it doesn't take a lot of volume to move the share price substantially. The majority of stocks that trade for $5 or less are considered to be penny stocks - although several small companies trade for more than $10 per share - they just have a smaller float, keeping them in the category of a small cap company. Several companies can trade for below $0.01 - these companies typically have very large floats. Others however have low volume, making it difficult to get filled at the bid and ask prices. Unlike large caps, small caps normally don't have to worry about listing requirements and regulatory standards. Its not surprising to hear stories of penny stock speculators who have enjoyed incredible success by beating the odds. The reason is simple - the heightened risk means a higher profit potential. A 1 penny move on a 1 cent stock is a 100% profit - effectively doubling your money. Profits of 1000%+ are not unheard of. Since these stocks move up fast, profits can be had very quickly for the nimble investor.

The good news is, there are a few things you can do to lower risk. It doesn't matter if you decide to do your own research on small caps, or put some money towards software for stock trading, there are important things to keep in mind. It is important to be extremely judgmental while investing. For a lot of these companies, the lack of comprehensive and compelling business plan makes them an even risker investment. You could sign up to a penny stock newsletter, however, let a subscription be the start, not the end of your research. Several companies also specialize in penny stock research. While this information may not be free, it may pay to get a subscription to their service. Another thing to look for are companies who consistently trade a high number of shares each day. Look for volumes of at least 500 000 shares traded each day. This not only provides you with liquidity, it shows that other investors are also interested. Liquidity is another important aspect to examine before investing. The number of day-to-day trade volume is generally a better indicator of trade worthiness than average trade volume. The secret to making money with penny stocks is no different than large caps: does the company know how to sell its products or services? A company that is making money can expand. A company that is selling the dream can only talk a good game, not expand their business. Is your potential small cap purchase looking for financing, or looking to take profits and make more money? By doing your homework first, you can drastically increase the odds of making money. You can't escape volatility - its what gives penny stocks their potential for huge returns. Sometimes the stock will drop without any warning. Therefore, it is a must to have an entry and exit plan which should be followed under all circumstances. Do yourself a favor - avoid the temptation to invest more than 10% in penny stocks.

Everyone loves a "beating the odds" story. It sells newspapers. Remember, this is investing, not gambling. Its not as easy as it seems. Just because someone got lucky with 38 penny stock picks, doesn't mean its going to happen to you. Use caution.
