The numbers don’t lie, Venezuela is indeed an absolute legend in beauty pageants. Venezuela has six Miss Universes, five Miss Worlds, five Miss Internationals and one Miss Earth, accumulating more international beauty titles than any other country in the world. Miss Venezuela places into the Miss Universe semifinals each consecutive year, and always in the top six or higher every year from 1991 to 2003.
Venezuela has also twice held the Miss Universe and Miss World titles simultaneously in 1981 and again in 1995. In total, it has won over seventy international crowns. Other than Venezuela, no country had ever won the Miss Universe crown on consecutive years. Beauty in Venezuela is considered a national sport. Winning in pageants is comparable to China ‘s winning gold medals in the Olympic Games.
Each year thousands of young women, usually from wealthy families and having spent much of their growing up years in training to become beauty queens, line up for entry into the Miss Venezuela competition. 500 girls are then picked to enter the state beauty competitions, after which the list is cut down to 60.
Once shortlisted for the pageant, the competitor begins an intensive training program which can last for six months. From 60 girls, only 28 are selected to compete in the Miss Venezuela Contest which is the country’s most watched TV program.The winners or titleholders are then asked to stay and live in the school for another year for more vigorous training before they embark on the mission to earn an international crown.
The time and effort Venezuelan girls put into training may well be the main reason why they hold the most number of international beauty titles but other reasons may be cited for accomplishing such a feat. Venezuela is home to the most contented and happiest people in the world. Living in a beautiful and diverse country, it is a melting pot of different nationalities producing unique physical features, not to mention a rich cultural heritage.
In effect, the physical beauty one is born with paired with the regal “walk and talk” of a queen as a result of proper and intensive schooling a Venezuelan beauty becomes an absolute legend in the world of beauty.
